John and Martha's cenotaph was researched and placed in Pine Forest Cemetery where many of their descendants are buried. They had eleven known children and several of their children and descendants are buried there. Her date of death is not proven that I know of, but came from Richey family records. The Upshur County courthouse burned so we may never know. Family information has passed down that John Richey rode to Texas and crossed the Mississippi River when it was frozen ice. He contracted the flu and died in Red River in August 1840 according to Probate records and family information. The Richey family came from SC to Jefferson County, Alabama, selling their Alabama land in 1837. The family moved to Texas as a group and applied for land grants on 7 Nov 1839. The oldest son, John Stuart Richey, received a land grant in Hopkins County, Texas, where the Pine Forest Cemetery is located. Martha is on the 1850 Upshur County census with two of her children: James Andrew Richey and Sarah Frances Carlton Richey. She has property described in the Harrison Land District of 160 acres on 20 Dec 1847, Book P page 74. This is a partial replacement for the 640 acres which she was entitled to as a married family with children, but the patent apparently was never issued. John died before the conditions of the Class 2 permit could be issued and the survey notes were not turned in on the original 640 acres in Red River County (according to a Richey Researcher and the Texas Land Office). John Stuart Richey, his oldest son applied for 320 acres (as a single man). The John S Richie survey of 320 acres was issued in Hopkins County, Texas. It has been thought from some family members, that Martha's maiden name might be Stuart, but that has not been proven either. There is also no proof of parents for husband, John Richey.
