Lucille worked as a homemaker for most of her life, having worked as a short order cook at various restaurants in the Fernandina area. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist faith. She love to sew and quilt. She cherished quoting and writing poetry as well as songs, which she always kept in her bible, and reminded her family of them often.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She always had a strong faith in the Lord and loved reading scripture and often made reference to it.
She was married to Army Sgt. Cullen Clinton Chewning. She became a widow on July 8, 1944, when he was killed during World War II in France. Together they had 2 daughters.
She later remarried to James Odas Strickland, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.
Lucille was preceded in death by her 2nd husband, James Odas Strickland, who passed away in June 2002.
Her survivors include her son, Larry Strickland,Sr. of Macclenny; three daughters, Daphine Jubito Willey of Atlantic Beach,FL; Cordelia Chewning Austin of Fernandina Beach,FL; Yvonnie Chewning Crews of Hortense,GA.
Five brothers Fred Chewning of Homerville,GA; Jesse, Chester, Floyd, and Carlton Chewning, all of Jacksonville,FL; three sisters, Dean Seagle of Panama City,FL; Mildred Taylor and Linda Chewning, both of Jacksonville,FL; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
