Daniel Elgert immigrated from Germany and came directly to LaSalle County. The family left from the port of Bremen and arrived in New York City on 10 Jun 1872 aboard the Smidt. The family consisted of Daniel, his 1st wife Henrietta and their children Justine, Fredrick, Carl, August, Bertha, Julius, and Adline.

Daniel was married three times:
-1st to Henrietta Marquardt, sometime before 1850 in Germany. She was born 1824 in Germany, and is believed to have died before 1875 in LaSalle County, when Daniel remarried. She was the mother of all his children.
-2nd to Justina Grabow on 30 Jun 1875 in La Salle County. She was born in 1815 in Germany, and is believed to have died before 1885 in LaSalle County, when Daniel remarried.
-3rd to Henrietta Grabow on 14 Aug 1885 in Peru, LaSalle County. She was born 12 Nov 1831 in Germany, and survived Daniel. In 1905 she was living in Enterprise, Jackson County, Minnesota where her brothers Fred and August lived. (They are both buried in the Peru City Cemetery.)

On Daniel's 1885 marriage certificate he noted it was his 3rd marriage and gave his parents as Johann Elgert and Caroline Lüdtke.

His probate was filed in 1893 in LaSalle County, Illinois. In his will, dated 27 Jan 1893, written the day before his death, he lists his heirs as his wife Henrietta, and surviving children Fredrick, August, Bertha Tessmer, Julius, and Adline Wehmeyer.
