Rev. Newbury was a Presbyterian minister who embraced The New School movement.* He moved from Cleveland Presbytery in 1854 and served as a professor at Dubuque Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa (1855-1856), after which he was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church at What Cheer, Iowa for three years. In 1865 he was the Stated Supply Pastor at Council Hill, Iowa. (The content of this paragraph was taken from the History of the Presbyterian Church in Iowa 1837-1900 by Rev. Dr. Joseph W. Hubbard, page 227.)
(*To explain; briefly, the Old-New Schools split in the Presbyterian denomination began in 1837. The Old School was the more conservative, whereas the New School was less so. The core of it was over the level of strictness one should adhere to the teachings of theologian John Calvin. The division was eventually exacerbated by the issue of slavery. The New Schoolers opposed slavery. The two sides began to stitch themselves together again over the years 1865-1870, after which they were again seamlessly together.)
