Mr. Newbury was born 8 Sept. 1843 in Allegan, Michigan. He was a descendant of several well known early families of New England, icluding the Sargeants. Newbury St. in Boston is named for his family.

During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 44th Iowa Infantry. After his discharge, he returned to Michigan. Yet, the weather was too severe for him. In early 1872, he left for Santa Barbara, California with great hope of regaining his health.

On 9 July, 1873, he married a long friend, Francis Kellogg in San Francisco (San Francisco Daily Morning Call).

Mr. and Mrs. Newbury were one of the founding European families of the Conejo Valley in California. The City of Newbury Park is named after him.
