Harold Lyons “H.L.” DeJarnette, Jr. left our earthly presence Saturday, January 11, 2020 while being surrounded by loved ones. He was born on October 17, 1952, the son of the late Harold Lyons DeJarnette, Sr. and Nancy Squires DeJarnette.

On June 18, 1971, H.L. married his life companion, JoAnn Moorman DeJarnette. They have two children Amy (Duane) Flood and Michael (Angela) DeJarnette. They have six grandchildren: Samuel and Claire Flood, Laci (Jason) Nunn, Dalton DeJarnette, Trey and Madison Payne and four great grandchildren: Kaden, Kila, Kaysen and Jaden. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by a sister Mary (Randall) Decker, in-laws: Sam and Nell Moorman, Marilyn (Max)Miller, Buck (Ronda) Moorman, Neal Carr and bonus sister Linda (Kenny) Basham and many other cousins. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews that will miss their Uncle Herbie and many of his horse and mule family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Terrie Carr. H.L. loved his family very much.

H.L. was a life long resident of McQuady where he farmed the family farm. For many years, he was an over the road 18 wheel driver. This profession allowed he and JoAnn to travel the country. He was also a volunteer firefighter for over two decades. H.L. loved horses and mules and until the last several years was an avid rider, traveling each year to Eminence, MS for an annual horse ride that brought thousands of horse enthusiasts from around the United States. In recent years, his health prevented him from sitting in the saddle so he bought a wagon and team and began a new passion of wagon rides. One of his favorite weekend activities was to take a team and go with friends for a wagon ride. They could be seen traveling the roads of rural Kentucky at a leisurely pace because there was absolutely no reason to get in any hurry.

Funeral services will be held at Corinth Baptist Church in McQuady, KY on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 11 AM with Rev. Andrew Rupard and Rev. Kent Miller officiating. Following the service, H.L. will be transported by his team and wagon to McQuady Cemetery for burial. Visitation will be held at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home on Tuesday, 3:30 – 8 PM and Thursday at the church after 9 AM.
