Louis Cleveland Mendenhall, 94, of Rutherford Ave., N.W., departed this life early Sunday morning in a local hospital.

A beautiful life came to a close. The angels summoned him from labor to reward, quietly and peacefully from mortal life to eternal life. He bore his sickness with patience for the last 10 years.

He was born August 28, 1897 in Concord, N.C. to the late A.D. Mendenhall and Laura Mendenhall. The oldest of 12 children, he came to Roanoke when he was very young.

He committed his life to Christ at an early age and joined the High Street Baptist Church under the pastorate of Elder W.E. Lee, singing in the choir and serving as an Usher, always at his post of duty. Under the pastorate of Rev. Robert Johnson Smith, he was ordained as a Deacon and served well visiting the shut-in and such. Under the pastorate of Rev. Frederick G. Sampson, he was always willing and able to participate in activities when called upon. His sincerity, loyalty, and devotion was always exemplified with a warm and friendly smile. One of his tasks was to ring the church bells for funerals under the pastorate of Rev. Noel C. Taylor. He was a member of the "Count On Me" Club. A great believer in prayer, he attended prayer services regularly until ill health prevented his going. He loved his church and music. He was an employee of Norfolk & Western Railway for many years and received his Veteran's Pin for dedicated service. After retiring he worked at the Burrell Memorial Hospital for 18 years in the Dietary Department. There he made many friends with doctors, nurses, employees, and patients. They loved and respected him as a Christian and some would ask if he was a minister.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy A. Payne for many years. Those were years of love, affection, caring and sharing.

He was humble, kind, fatherly, neighborly, friendly, and willing to help anyone in need. He was a member and great supporter of the Y.M.C.A. He was deeply hurt when it was reported that he attended a wedding in Baltimore, Md. in his condition. Servant of God well done.

Funeral service will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m., High Street Baptist Church, Dr. Noel C. Taylor officiating with burial in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
