Mrs. Byrd, WTCU Radio Director, Dies at 76
The South Carolina Radio director of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Mrs. C. T. Byrd of Florence, died at home Wednesday night after several years of ill health. She was 76.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Central Methodist Church by Dr. Bryce Herbert. Burial, directed by Waters Funeral Home, will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be B. B. Gilbert, T. R. Miller, John D. Moore, Peter D. Hyman, David N. Thomas, Graham Cadell, M. C. McMullen, Walter S. Carter Jr. and E. N. Zeigler Jr.
Honorary bearers will be members of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, Order of Railway Conductors; Atlantic Coast Line Retired Men's Club; Dr. Harry S. Allen, Dr. Myers H. Hicks, Archie C. Odom and C. V. Flowers.
Mrs. Byrd, the former Miss Vallerie Carter of Mars Bluff, was a daughter of the late James H. and Ellen Johnson Carter. She was a lifelong resident of Florence and Florence County. She was a member of Central Methodist Church, Alice Smith Sunday School Class, Women's Society of Christian Service, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was S. C. radio director of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
Surviving are the widower, Clarence T. Byrd of Florence; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil Arnold of Darlington and Mrs. Thomas Williams of Columbia; a son, C. Carter Byrd of Florence; a sister, Mrs. Gladys C. Thames of Florence; and six grandchildren.
