Sarah Coe Wiley was the daughter of Moses Coe and Sarah Bernardussen Ryder. She is a direct descendant of Robert Coe, who came to this country in 1634 and settled on Long Island in New York.
Sarah married Alexander Carr Wiley on August 27, 1795 and was mother to 10 children, including Eliza Wiley Wood and Edmond R. Wiley. At the end of her life, she was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Eliza Wiley Wood and George Wood. Mention of her can be found on page 209 of the book "ROBERT COE, PURITAN, HIS ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS, 1340-1910" by J. Gardner Bartlett. The following is the Moses Coe section from that work:
157. MOSES ' COE (Daniel 5 (67), Daniel Benjamin Benjamin Robert '), born on Long Island, N. Y., probably about 1744, first appears as a soldier in the Revolution, being enrolled at Goshen. Orange Co., N. Y., in Capt. Daniel Denton's company of Col. William Allison's regiment of militia. (New York in the Revolution, pp. 163 and 255.) After the war he settled in New York City where in the U. S. Census of 1790 he is given as the head of a family of two males over sixteen years, four males under sixteen years, and three females. Records of some of his children appear in the registers of the old Presbyterian church, and as "Moses Coe, carpenter," his name is entered in most of the New York City Directories from 1790 to 1826, except about 1800 when for a few years he was a wharfinger at Norwalk, Conn. (See History of Norwalk, Conn., p. 305.) He died at New York City in the autumn of 1831.
His will dated Aug. 17, 1831, left all estate in trust to his grandson and executor, Edmund R. Wiley, to be distributed as follows: $30 to bury son Benjamin Coe then in the almshouse at Bellevue; $30 to grandson Peter Vanderhoef; a bed to granddaughter Sarah Blakney; all residue to daughter Sarah Wiley, children of daughter Ann Vanderhoef (viz., Peter, Ann, and Sarah), and children of son James Coe (viz., Jane and Eliza). Witnesses: Cornelius Devoe, Harriet Wiley, Sarah Ryder. Probated Nov. 29, 1831. (Wills in Surrogate's Registry, New York City, vol. 68. p. 137.)
