Garth D. Bauer, 81, of Humboldt, passed away July 22, 2007 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. David Hobbs officiating. He will be laid to rest in Indian Mound Cemetery with full military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5240 and the Adams American Legion Post 119. Visitation with the family will be from 4:30 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.

Garth is survived by his wife, Ellen Bauer of Humboldt; children, Connie (Edward) Werling of Independence, Iowa, Roma Wilson (John Skow) of Dakota City; Valoree (Don) Sorensen of Dakota City; Emery (Kris) Bauer of Gillette, Wyoming, and Randy (Jacqui) Bauer of Humboldt; 14 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren with three more on the way; brothers, Bruce (Katy) Bauer of Pocahontas, Dallas (Joyce) Bauer of La Mesa, NM, and Kendall (Elaine) Bauer of Sloan, Iowa; sister, Bonnie DeMers of Spencer; and sister-in-law, LeAnn Bauer of Kimberling City, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beverly Fernau; and brother, Boyd Bauer.

Garth Dalton Bauer, the son of Peter and Alma Fern (Robson) Bauer, was born December 4, 1925 on a farm in Greene County, Iowa. As a child, he moved with his parents to a farm near Carroll then in 1938 to a farm near Pocahontas. In 1943, he graduated from Ware High School and following his education, farmed with his father and helped construct the Prisoner of War Camp at Algona. He served with the United States Army during World War II and was stationed with the 759th Field Artillery in Europe. He received his discharge on May 28, 1946 and returned home. Garth and Ellen Duncan were united in marriage on May 11, 1947 at the First Christian Church at Sac City. The couple made their home at Rolfe where Garth along with a partner opened a black smith shop. In March of 1956, the family moved to Humboldt and Garth was employed in Leo Doyle's Machine Shop. He then went to work in Fort Dodge first at Ideal Heating and Sheet Metal then with Colonial Heating and Sheet Metal where he remained until his retirement in December of 1981.

Garth was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 5240 where he served as quartermaster for five years and transported fellow veterans to the hospital in Des Moines and the Adams American Legion Post 119 where he used his metal skills to help construct their steamboat float. He was also a 40-year member of the neighborhood potluck and card club, a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local 45 in Des Moines and enjoyed his time as an amateur ham radio operator. He and Ellen belonged to the Algonquin Camping Club and enjoyed traveling all around the country including three trips to Alaska. He also enjoyed reading, traveling to blue grass festivals, his cars and tractors, and watching television, especially RFD TV.
