He enlisted in the Jackson Artillery in November of 1861. He was transferred to Company F., 5th NY Artillery on garrison duty at Staten Island, then to Fort Marshall, Baltimore, and lastly, to Harper's Ferry in VA. The Company was the victim of Col. Miles' surrender, but all were paroled in 24 hours. They marched to Baltimore via Frederick City and Annapolis, and then were sent to Chicago. He died at Camp Douglass in Chicago, at age 26 on Oct. 27, 1862.
