Japheth/Japhet Allen was a farmer in East Bridgewater, MA, and served in the Massachusetts militia during American Revolution. He marched in response to the Lexington alarm on April 19, 1775, and fought in the battles of Bunker Hill and Saratoga. He was at Valley Forge in the winter of 1778. He was the son of Matthew Allen and Sarah Harden [source:: "History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater, in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Including an Extensive Family Register" (1840) by Nahum Mitchell, p.99]. On Oct. 30, 1761, in Marshfield, MA, he filed his intention to marry Betsey (listed as Bettie) Thomas of Marshfield, according to MA vital records. They married on Nov. 26, 1761, according to the state index.

Japheth and Betsey's children [as listed in the Bridgewater book (Mitchell) as well as Massachusetts vital records]:

Laban b. 1763 [also seen as 1766 in error; married Mary Fowler in Tamworth, NH]
Sarah b. 1765
Phebe b. 1768 [married Capt. Simon Gilman of Tamworth, NH]
Japhet b. 1771 [a mariner, married Sarah Bartlet in Newburyport, MA]
Betty [Betsy] b. 1773 [married John Pickering Cotton of Wolfeboro, NH]
Jenny [Jane] b. 1775 [married Simon Smith of Tamworth, NH]
Lydia b. 1778 [died young]
Isaac [born 1782 in Tamworth, NH, married Betsey Gilman]

The family moved to Tamworth, NH, about the year 1780, the year Japheth bought property from Jonathan Moulton [Stafford County Registry of Deeds, Book 2, p578], and are listed in the 1790 census in Tamworth. Many of these details are given in "The Allen Family of New England" on pages 226-7 in The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011, Vol. 10, on Ancestry.com. They are also listed in North American Family Histories, also on Ancestry.com. His family is also described in "Genealogy of the Allen and Witter families: among the early settlers of this continent and their descendants" by Allen, Asa W., (1872) p. 102-103, 107, which can be found online.

Researched and written by FaG member 49523294. She is a descendant of Simon Smith, who was married first to Jane/Jenny Allen, Betsey and Japheth's daughter.
