James was the son of Jesse Patty and Delilah Doss. He immigrated with his family to Union County, SC in 1773. He married Mary Cook in Cane Creek, Union, SC in 1801. Known children: Mary Polly, Rev.John Patty, Delilah, Isaac, Elias, James, Charles, Robert, and Nathan.A group of Quakers came north in a caravan of thirty four wagons with James Patty as the leader of the expedition. On reaching Ohio, he settled on land in Butler County and in 1839, he settled near Cutler, Carroll, IN.
James met with an accident, as a result walked with a stiff knee. He was a man of deep religious convictions and served as a minister in the Friends Society. James Patty was opposed to slavery which was the reason for the emigration to Ohio.
