Albert (Adelbert) Gubala, 90. Shenandoah's last surviving Polish Army veteran of WWI, died unexpectedly Sunday at his home, 128 North Catherine Street. Born in Poland, he came to this country in 1912 and worked in the west prior to enlisting for service with the Polish Division of the Canadian Army which four in Europe in World War I . After discharge from the service he came to Shenandoah with a relative to work in the mines, despite a shattered hip suffered during the war. He last worked at Maple Hill Colliery. He was a member of Holy Ghost Polish National Catholic Church and the Shenandoah Senior Citizens. His wife, Agnes (Matlowski nee Dziekunowski), died in 1965. Surviving are three sons, Stanley Matlowski, businessman of Frackville; Charles Matlowski and Edward Gubala of Maples, Florida; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Dombroski and Mrs. George (Leona) Beaver, Shenandoah; Mrs. R. C. (Hedy) Hunter, Maples, Florida; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral is Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Oravitz Home for Funerals, with Mass at 10 in Holy Ghost Church and burial in St. Casimir's Cemetery,. Shenandoah. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 2-9.
