Three Portsmouth area men were killed Monday near Oak Hill when their convertible crashed head-on into a truck. Killed instantly in the crash were Charles A. Darby 22 of 1712 Eight St.; Richard E. Boggs, 24, of Portsmouth Rt. 3, and Charles Schwable, 21, of Portsmouth Rt. 5. All three men were employed as construction workers by Kaiser Aluminum Co. at Ravenswood, W.Va. The bodies were taken to Kuhner Funeral Home in Oak Hill and were moved from there to funeral homes in Portsmouth.

Mr. Darby was born Jan. 16, 1935, in Greenup County, Ky., to Henry and Ruth Sturgill Darby. The father is deceased.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kiser Darby, whom he married April 16, 1955; his mother, Ruth Sturgill Cline of Freemont; stepfather, Howard Cline of Freemont; a son, Charles Alton Darby Jr.; three brothers, Ronald, 1719 Williams St., and Mark and Henry Lee of Sandusky; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Margaret Elam of Fontana, Calif., and Mrs. Carrie Fay Sowards, 526 Short St., West Portsmouth; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Florence Sturgill, 725 Fourth St., and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Darby of Greenup, Ky.

He was a member of Christian Baptist Church and the International Assn. of Bridge. Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Union.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mabert Road Christian Baptist Church with Rev. Hollie Conley officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the residence at 1712 Eighth St. after 8 tonight. Emrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
