Leslie French, 75, dies; retired sales manager
SCOTTSDALE - Leslie George French, 75, of Scottsdale, a retired Phoenix regional sales manager for the Colgate-Palmolive Co. and a Valley resident since 1958, died Saturday in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital.

Mr. French was born in Tonganoxie, Kan., and attended Washburn College in Topeka, Kan., while working in the advertising department of the Topeka Daily Capital.

After five years as a salesman for Loomis Advertising Agency, Kansas City, Mo., he became an advertising manger for Sears Roebuck and Co. in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He joined the Colgate-Palmolive Co. in the sales and marketing department in Topeka in 1936. He was promoted to a regional supervisor and transferred to the Chicago soap-sales region. Then he became the company's district soap-sales manager in Minneapolis.

In 1952, he became the Chicago regional sales manager and was in charge of seven district offices and a 160 man sales organization.

Mr. French took over Colgate's new Phoenix regional headquarters in 1958 and retired in 1965.

After his retirement from Colgate, he was general manager of sales and marketing for Neutrogena Soap Co, of Los Angeles for two years. He was a past president of Scottsdale Hiram Club, a member of the board of directors of the Phoenix branch of English Speaking Union and a charter member and first marshal of the Camelback Daylight Masonic Lodge 75.

He also was a member of Scottish Rite in Minneapolis, Masonic Lodge in Topeka and the St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church, Paradise Valley.

Survivors include his wife, Wortha W. French; a stepson, Maurice McFarland; a sister-in-law, Bernice French and three nephews.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church, 6715 N. Mockingbird Lane, followed by the final rites of the Masonic Lodge.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road.
