Wayne Gene Alstat, 85, of Vergennes passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Wayne was born February 22, 1934, in Ora Township, Jackson County to William and Verena (Sherrmann) Alstat. He attended Creekpaum Grade School and Vergennes Community High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. Wayne married Barbara H. Shields, on July 22, 1960 in Belleville, Illinois, and they shared 59 years of marriage.

Wayne was Township Highway Commissioner of Ora Township from 1959 to 1981 and in 1980 he was elected to the 82nd session of the House of Representatives. Wayne was nominated as a write in candidate, and was only the second write in candidate for this position in the history of Illinois to win this office. In 1983 a group of Vergennes area farmers and business owners opened a farm equipment dealership known as Vergennes Equipment. Wayne served as a board member until the dealership merged with H&R Agripower in 2008. Wayne worked as a grain warehouse examiner for the Illinois Department of Agriculture after his time in the General Assembly and as Agricultural manager for Illinois Department of Corrections until his retirement at the end of 1996. Wayne then returned to the family farm where he worked with his sons. Mr. Alstat had been a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau since 1952. He was also a member of the American Legion, Eagles, and the Elks, and was of the Lutheran Faith.

Wayne is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son; William, two brothers and one sister.
