The son of William & Nancy (Gearhart) Stover, married Nancy E. Stover, dau. of Jacob Stover and Elizabeth Emmert, and fathered Susan S. (b. 05/11/58 - married John Calvin Henneberger), M. Emmert (b. 03/06/62), Anna E. (b. @1865, d. 1875), and Florence K. (b. 1870) - m. Hostetter. In 1860, he was a sheriff living with his family in Mount Carroll, Carroll County, Illinois, but obviously was back in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, two years later.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of thirty-four in Franklin County October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. G, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). Promoted to 1st lieutenant effective May 1, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.

In 1880, he ran for the office of county sheriff but lost by 112 votes. On July 15, 1886, he applied for a disability pension and received it, dying shortly thereafter at his home in Shady Grove reportedly from cancer of the liver.

On December 30, 1886, Nancy applied for a widow's pension and received it.

NOTE: Stover's birth year on the tombstone is almost certainly incorrect. All but one of his obituaries say he died at "about 55 years" with one claiming "54." Censuses of that era are not accurate sources for determining precise age, but Stover is found in three of them born ca. 1829, and the fourth asserts 1830.
He is reported in several online family trees with a birthdate of October 4, 1829, which is worthy of consideration as it does reflect his age reported in the various censuses. There is a Lancaster County Mennonite Vital Record cited in one family tree that claims 1827 as Stover's birth year, but it is the date taken from a tombstone reading in the cemetery.

His Father, William Stover, Sr., documented in the DAR records:
William Stover born on - - 1795 [1794 from headstone] at Franklin Co PA
died at Antrim Twp Franklin Co PA on - Feb - 1869 and his ( 1st ) wife
Nancy Gearhart born on 3 - Apr - 1800 at Franklin Co PA
died at Kaufmanns Station PA on - Jan - 1893 married on - - 1819
6. The Said William Stover was the child of Daniel Stover born on - - 1757 at Franklin Co PA
