Holladay, Utah - Keith Bowden, age 93, has taken his last ride home. One of the last remaining real cowboys of his time passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019. Born in Holladay, Utah on October 1, 1926 to Dewey and Violet Bowden.
Keith lived his entire life in Holladay. In his early years dad had a short stint with the Navy for 7-8 months. He contracted rheumatic fever in which he was medically discharged. Dad returned home and obtained a job with Mt. Fuel (Dominion Energy presently). He married Ardonna Bess on May 28, 1948. Mom and dad built a 200 square foot small house on Spring Lane and started a family. The one bedroom home housed 5 of us for 11 years, until they were able to build a larger home just down the street. That little house was quite cozy, but oh so crowded. His job at Mt. Fuel was short lived, for dad had a run in with his supervisor and much to mom's dismay, he quit. From that time forward he never had a boss again. His independence was his for the rest of his life, minus the past 5 months of being confined. However to supplement income he operated a small dairy, milking cows and selling the milk product. He also had a couple of teams of horses in which he did hayrides at night for group parties and such. Along with hauling turkeys from Nephi, Utah, dad spent many long hours to make ends meet. But his true passion was that of horses and raising cattle. In 1950 mom and dad started a family business (Bowden's Arena) of boarding and training horses. Times were tough, money was tight, and many endless hours were spent to make the business go. The business lasted 40 years-an incredible feat in which many tried to copy, but failed. Mom and dad retired their business in 1990, acquiring many lifelong friendships and acquaintances. Dad was an accomplished horseman. He specialized in the sport of Cow Cutting. He loved doing it so much. Keith was one of the 10 founders of the U.C.H.A. (Utah Cutting Horse Association). With one of the only indoor facilities available in the area, dad acquired many clients to learn the Cow Cutting Sport. Keith showed competitively throughout the intermountain west for many years. He won numerous cutting contests, and was consistently placing in the money. In the 60's and early 70's, dad was the Utah State Open Champion many times.
After retiring in 1990, dad bought a motorhome, and he and mom did some much deserved traveling. They did this for many years enjoying each other's companionship. Mom passed away in March of 2013. Dad missed her so much, but went forward doing the many things that mom once did for him. Up to his last few months of life he was still so independent-driving to his Utah County properties, meeting friends daily for coffee, and taking care of his house.
Dad was preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce and Wayne; wife, Ardonna; and daughter, Shauna. Survived by sons, Corey (Kris) and Bart; 5 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Thanks Dad for teaching us so many important things in life. The most important being "hard work never hurt anybody."
The family wishes to thank IMC and Staff, Aspen Ridge, and The Ridge at Cottonwood for the professional and excellent care provided to Dad these past 5 months. A special thanks to Cache Allen, you were such a godsend to our family when needed. Also Fernanda, and Marci at The Ridge at Cottonwood. Also Kassie and her Hospice team. The family appreciates all that you did to make dad comfortable throughout his ordeal. A shout out to Thaes Webb-a great true friend, who has been part of dad's life and our family for many years. We know you will miss the drives with dad to Utah County to see his properties, as well as the breakfast meetings on Mondays you had with dad. He always looked forward to going on these adventures with you. THANKS T. Webb.
Services to honor Keith will be on Thursday, November 21, 2019, with a viewing for friends and family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary 4760 South State Street Murray, Utah. A graveside service will be held Friday, November 22, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive. For those attending services, feel free to wear Western attire. For that is what dad would have wanted.
