Initially, there is no explanation of why Louis claimed in all his Census and World War draft registrations to be born in England on 14 Jun 1879, when his two next oldest brothers Max and Keever were born in New York. However, a birth record for a "Lewis Fox" whose birth was registered between July and September 1879 in Whitechapel, London county, England, volume 1C, page 328 shows that Louis was, indeed, born in England. The certificate states that a "Lewis Fox", son of Aaron Fox and Ester Kott Fox, was born 04 July 1879 at 3 Pelham St., Spitalfield, Mile End New Town, Middlesex County, England. Apparently the family traveled back to England after Max and Keever were born, Esther gave birth to Louis, and the family returned to the US. In fact, there is a ship manifest that *may* be Aaron and his family coming back from such a trip. The SS Greece arrived in New York City on 09 August 1880, having sailed from London. The passengers of note were: Meyer Fox, age 33, Hannah Fox, age 33, Woolf (infant), Samuel (7), Marks (5), Isaac (4) and Lewis (2), all noted as from Poland. The Kalisz, Poland, marriage record for Louis' parents, Aaron and Esther, shows Aaron as Abraham Mayer, which might explain why the husband on the manifest is "Meyer"; there is no explanation of why the wife is "Hannah" instead of Esther, but the children's names all match the children of Aaron Fox and Ester Kott Fox, although the ages are in the wrong order. Woolf (William) would be the 7-year-old, Samuel would be the 5-year-old, Max (as "Marks") would be the 4-year-old, Keever (shown as "Isaac in the 1890 NY Police Census) would be the 2-year-old, and Louis ("Lewis") would be the infant. So, the family may have returned to England for some reason after Keever was born in 1877. This 1880 manifest may not even show the same family, so caution must be used.

The birth record for Louis' son Robert shows the father as born in New York, not England as most other records state, which is an error.

No record has been found for Louis in the 1940 US Census, but Louis World War II draft registration shows him and Margaret living at 3300 Bailey Avenue in Bronx Co., which ties to a mention of that address in the www.findagrave.com record for his wife, Margaret Jane Doherty Fox, who died in 1944 and is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens Co., NY.

Louis' World War I draft registration notes his birth as 14 June 1879 in London and mentions his wife as Margaret Jane. There is also a Social Security Application and Claims Index record that show the same birth date, a Social Security number as 063-01-4612, and lists a claim date of 25 March 1954, which would be just before his 75th birthday. The record also states that on 27 August 1976 that his name was Louis Fox; why that entry was made is not evident.

A call to Mount Olivet Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens Co., NY, to obtain details about the graves of Louis' wives, Sarah and Margaret, discovered the grave and date of death for Louis. With the dates of death and burial, details were found on ancestry.com. The New Church Register of the Community Presbyterian Church of Elmont (NY), page 141, shows that Louis died on 15 February 1960 and had been living at 9 Clinton Street in Elmont. The New York State Death Index, 1957-1968, gives the same date of death, but refers to his residence as Angle Sea, Nassau Co., NY, which is just a few miles from Elmont. The cemetery reports that Louis and his first wife, Sarah Amelia Doherty Fox, are buried in the same grave, #723, and his second wife (Sarah's older sister) and Sarah's child William (born and died in 1907) are buried in grave #722. The cemetery reports that there is no stone for Louis, Margaret or William, just for Sarah.Louis was born in London, England. He immigrated to the United States in 1880. He was Naturalized in 1901.

Louis married Sarah Amelia Doherty on 24 Aug 1905 in Manhattan, New York. They had two sons, Robert Louis and John William Alonzo. John only lived two weeks.

Sarah died in 1917 and Louis married her oldest sister, Margaret Jane, on 9 Sep 1918 in Manhattan, New York.

Per his birth registration record, Louis was born "Lewis Fox" on 04 July 1879 in Spitalfields, Mile End New Town (now Whitechapel), Middlesex Co., (part of Greater London), England. His parents were Aaron Fox and Esther Kott Fox. His parents and oldest two sons (who had been born in England) had gone to the US from England in 1875 but returned briefly to England with the first two sons plus the two additional sons who were born in New York in the interim. Shortly after Louis was born, the family returned to the US in 1880 (likely ship manifests for both trips have been identified). Louis' 1942 World War II Draft Registration shows them living at 3300 Bailey Avenue in the Bronx, the same address where they were living when Margaret died in 1944, an address that ties to the notes posted here by another researcher.

Louis and Sarah had two children. The first child was Robert Louis Fox, born 30 Sep 1906 and died 16 July 1975. The second child was born 03 Sep 1907 at the Fox home, 227 East 43rd Street in Manhattan, as "Baby Fox (John William Alonzo)". The child died as "William Jno. Alonzo Fox" on 17 Sep 1907 at "Flower Hospital" in Manhattan.

A call to the cemetery confirmed that Louis, his first wife, Sarah Amelia Doherty Fox, their infant son William John Alonzo Fox (also recorded as Jonathan William Alonzo Fox), and Louis' second wife (Sarah's older sister) Margaret Jane Doherty Fox, are all buried together in the Oakwood Section at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth, Queens County, NY. Louis and Sarah are buried in the same grave (#723); the infant and Margaret are buried in grave #722. The stone for Sarah is posted here on www.findagrave.com, but the cemetery reports there is no stone for Louis, Margaret, or the infant. Their other son, Robert, and his wife, are buried at Green-Wood Cemetery.
