Mr. Hershell Virgil Hurst, 85 of Bryceville, FL, passed away early Saturday morning, November 9, 2019, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center - Riverside - under the care of Community Hospice.

Born in Waycross, GA on April 2, 1934, he had lived in Jacksonville, FL for several years prior to moving to Bryceville 40 years ago. Mr. Hurst had been a diesel mechanic and had worked for several different companies (Mercury Motor Express, Terminal Transport, Great Dane Trailer, and American Freight) over the years. He had also farmed and enjoyed working on tractors. Mr. Hurst was an avid outdoorsman. He had raised/trained dogs for quail hunting and had worked as a quail hunting guide at WW Ranch. He had also enjoyed dove hunting and fishing. Mr. Hurst was a Mason and was one of the original members of the Bryceville Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

He was a son of the late Thomas Pinkney & Sally Johnson Hurst. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Alice Benton Hurst; three sisters, Myrtle Varnell, Mary Elizabeth, & Jewell; and all of his brothers, James Albert, Madison David, Thomas Pinkney, Jr., Charles Grover, William Howard, Gene Autry, and Oden Ezekiel.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Sonja Hurst of Bryceville; his sister, Sally Karsten of St. Cloud, FL; his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Mikki & Ryan Silcox of Jacksonville; two great grandchildren, Celina Silcox and Colton Silcox; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A graveside service for Mr. Hurst will be held Wednesday morning, November 13, 2019, at 11:30 from the Beulah Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday morning from 10 until 11 and then proceed to the cemetery.
