The son of George Washington & Mary Ann (Sinclair or St. Clair) McVicker, in 1860 he was a farmer living in District 3, Monongalia County, (West) Virginia.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Morgantown, (West) Virginia, July 3, 1861, as a private with Co. E, 7th Virginia (later West Virginia) Infantry, U.S.. Wounded at the battle of Gettysburg July 2, 1863, he contracted a fever almost certainly from infection and died.
