Carl came to the United States from Hamburg, Germany in Dec of 1854 aboard the steamship Hammonia. He is listed as a "Kaufmann" or merchant/businessman/trader. He arrived in New York City where he studied English and worked for five years. In 1859, he moved to Harrisonburg, LA to help his sister, Catharine Wiesen Lachenwitz, whose husband had died. He married Eliza Ann Vickers Sept 20th, 1860. They owned 8 acres on the Taliaferro Bayou about .5 mile from the Harrisonburg Courthouse. They had six boys: Carl Jr. 1861-1863, Franc Martin 1863-1941, Dawsey 1865-1871, Augustus Martin 1867-1932, Charley 1871-1886 and William Duncan 1873-1957. Carl became a US citizen Nov 10th, 1873.
