He married Hannah Reeve Oct 1744 in Southold, Long Island. (Salmon Records). This Hannah probably married, second John Case Jul 17, 1760 (Salmon Records and Mattituck Parish Records). If so, she is the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Salmon) Reeve. Thomas Reeve referred to his daughter, Hannah Case, in his 1760 will. Hannah Case died Mar 11, 1799 and is buried at Mattituck Parish Cemetery (in Find-A-Grave at Old Bethany Cemetery).
He drowned in 1750, age 33, in a boating accident along with four neighbors. (Mattituck Parish Cemetery Transcriptions - Craven in "History of Mattituck".
He had son Gershom, born 1743. This son may have had a mother other than Hannah Reeve, i.e., by an earlier unrecorded wife of Gershom-4, as 1743 is before their marriage. The birth date, however, is based on a calculated date of birth from the headstone using an age of 82 for the son when he died. If the inscription were in error, or written in error, she might still have been his mother.
There were three Gershoms to different fathers in the middle 1700's. There can be no doubt of the placement of this Gershom-4 born 1717 to theGershom-5 born 1743 for the following reasons. The first is the proximity of their graves to one another in Mattituck Parish Cemetery (next to current day Old Bethany Cemetery). Another reason is the explanation in the newspaper article concerning the suicide of the wife of Gershom-5 that his father had drowned 20 years earlier, while the Mattituck Parish Cemetery listing in Craven's History of Mattituck notes for Gershom born 1717 - "drowned with four of his neighbors".
