Maxine Oxford
7/29/1913 8/27/2002
Funeral services for long-time Taft resident, Maxine Oxford will be held crypt side at Westside Cemetery, Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at 10:30 a.m.
Maxine was the 5th child born to Everett and Lulu Thornton on July 29, 1913, in Licking, Missouri. She passed away peacefully with her family at her side, Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield.
Mrs. Oxford moved to Taft as a young girl, graduating from Taft Union High School in 1931. She married Harry Oxford on March 15, 1934. They were happily married for over 39 years and blessed with two daughters, Nonie and Sharon.
Maxine worked at various markets in Taft, retiring from Artz Liquor and Deli in the early 1980s after many enjoyable years of service there. In her spare time, Maxine enjoyed various different pastimes such as hunting and fishing with Harry, leatherwork, bowling and performing the many hours of work necessary to keep her home immaculate inside and out. Her family was a constant source of pride to her.
Her husband, Harry, daughter, Nonie, parents, Everett and Lulu, all of her brothers and sisters, Gene, Joe and Neil Thornton, Louise Stumbaugh and Faye Sprung, a grandson-in-law, Bob Cacia and many other family members preceded Mrs. Oxford in death. Surviving her are her daughter and son-in-law, Doug and Sharon Simmons; her grandchildren and their families, Lyle, Karen, Lynae, Laurin and Derek Barnes, Lorrie Cacia and her children, Sandy and Tom Meehan and Travis Anderson, Carrie and Scott Harper and their children, Joseph and Ethan Morris and Vincent Harper, Terri Simmons, Doug, Gina, Jessica, Stacie and Jason Hall, Greg, Tracy, Tori and Grant Simmons; great-great-grandchild, Julia Meehan.
A special thank you to Ken and Rita and their staff at The Hallmark for their kind and attentive care of Maxine during her last couple of years and to Dr. Cartmell for his grace and compassion at a most difficult time.
She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her!
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2002, from 4-8 p.m. at the Westside Family Mortuary.
