Funeral services were conducted Feb. 14 from Wright and Ferguson Chapel for Dr. A. G. Sanders, 88, of 735 Arlington St. Dr. Sanders died Feb. 13 in St. Dominic’s Hospital after a long illness.

A native of Georgetown, Tex., he was a longtime resident of Jackson where he was head of the Department of Romance Languages at Millsaps College from 1919-1955 and chairman of the Millsaps Library Committee during most of that time.

Dr. Sanders attended Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn., Southwestern University, and Yale.

He was a Rhodes Scholar and attended Magealea College, Oxford University where he was awarded his master’s degree. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Millsaps College.

Dr. Sanders was the co-author of three volumes of the Mississippi Provincial Archives which he wrote on commission for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

He was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers were Ross Moore, Frank Laney, Sam Knox, Robert Bergmark, Pete Wood, Charles Galloway, Paul Hardin, and Jim Livesay.

His survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Paul M. Hopkins of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Albert G. Sanders Jr. and Dr. Sam G. Sanders, both of Jackson; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Capt. J. Randolph Sanders of Houston, Tex.; and one sister, Miss Martha Pegues Sanders of Denton, Tex.

Interment was in the Lakewood Memorial Park.
