Dayang (means - Princess) Ghita Brooke was the daughter of the 2nd Rajah of Sarawak (Malaysia) Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke and his second wife Margaret Alice Lili de Windt.

The family made a trip to England, the first visit there since Charles and Margaret were married at Highworth in Wiltshire on October 26, 1869. On the voyage they made a stop in Singapore, where at the time there was a cholera outbreak. Charles and Margaret had the children professionally photographed while they were in Singapore. The children were Esca Brooke, Charles’ son from his first marriage, and Charles and Margaret’s three children, Ghita Brooke, and twins James Harry Brooke and Charles Clayton Brooke.

As they continued their voyage on board the P&O Liner, the MV Hydaspes, headed for England, all four children came down with fever. Esca was the only one to survive. The other three children were buried at sea.
