Ruth H. Tarkington
Ruth Northcutt Hopper Tarkington, 76, of 15 Charleston Green died at her home Friday after long illness. Born May 9, 1918, in Somerset, she was the daughter of the late Arville Zechariah and Mae Hughes Hopper. Formerly a school Steadier, she taught in Pulaski County, Somerset and Danville schools. She was later associated with Centre College. She is the widow of Charles Franklin Denny Jr., who died 1945, and Robert Knox Tarkington Jr., who died in 1991. She was active in community endeavors. She was co-chairman of Boyle County Meals on Wheels for 20 years. She was a member of the American Cancer Society board, Daughters of the American Revolution, Wilderness Road Homemakers Club and Young-Rodes Library Friends. Survivors include a son, Charles Franklin Denny III of Sumter, S.C.; a daughter, Margaret Denny Hicks of Mooresboro, N.C.; and four a grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at The Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Heritage Hospice and The Presbyterian Church building fund.
