Jesse Knowles Maynard was the son of John Maynard and Betsy Knowles - the first couple to be married in Bakersfield (1799).

Jesse Maynard bequeathed to the town the Jesse K Maynard Fund. "The interest and income from said fund shall be annually expended for the benefit and support of desrving poor residing in Bakersfield, who through no fault of theirs may be in needy circumstances." he willed... such people should be assisted in their homes as "desrving of something better than a home in the poor house."
