Bernard Martin Baumann was born on January 8, 1929, in rural Ann Township, Cottonwood County, the son of John and Amelia Baumann. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lamberton and confirmed in the Catholic faith also at St. Joseph's in Lamberton. He attended country school and high school in Storden.
As a young man, Bernard enjoyed playing baseball and was the pitcher for the Storden town team.
Bernard served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army from February 16, 1951 to his honorable discharge on January 29, 1953. He was stationed in Germany.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Kobbermann in Benson on July 28, 1951. Following his military service, he and Marilyn moved to Lamberton where he worked for a local farmer. In 1955, he moved his family to Clara City where he was employed by the Clara City Creamery as a butter maker and eventually the manager. In 1972, the family moved to Montevideo where he worked for the First District Association until his retirement in 1992.
Bernard enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surrounded by family, Bernard was called from this life at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. He was 82 years of age.
Surviving family include Marilyn, his wife of sixty years, now residing at the Golden Living Center in Olivia; his children: Mary, Doreen, Lois, June and Carl; his sister, Agnes Amburn; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Edward, John (and Edith), Jerome (and Dorothy) and LaVern; three sisters: Irene (and Ben) Hofmann, Gertie (and Clarence) Iverson and Loretta (and Lawrence) Quiring; and brother-in-law, Leonard Amburn.
