Rebecca was the 6th of 11 children of Daniel Fulton Hayden (1814-1857) and Mary E. Walker (1818-1894) of Meade County, Kentucky.

Rebecca's headstone reads, "Rebecca, wife of S. H. Dowell, Died Oct. 6, 1889, Aged 42 yrs., 7 mos., 18 ds."

Rebecca was married to Simeon Horace Dowell on Oct. 6, 1864 in Meade County, Kentucky by Rev. George H. Hicks. Rebecca and Simeon had 8 children:

1. Luella "Lulla" Dowell, born in Kentucky August 23, 1865, died August 26, 1868 in Kentucky.

2. Nathan Lee Dowell, born in Kentucky October 23, 1868, died near Hale, Missouri May 6, 1879.

3. Minnie Effie Dowell, born in Kentucky March 12, 1871, married to D. W. Veal Feb. 14, 1889, died in Marceline, Missouri April 11, 1956.

4. George Orville Dowell, born in Kentucky February 21, 1874, married Elma Burgener February 16, 1898, died September 1933 in Brookfield, Missouri.

5. Nannie Sue Dowell, born in Kentucky December 17, 1876, died December 13, 1877 near Hale, Missouri.

6. Barbara "Bessie" Elizabeth Dowell was born January 5, 1880 near Hale, Missouri. She was named after her great-grandmother Barbara (Shacklett) Dowell. Bessie was married to Henry Miller October 6, 1897 and they had 5 children; Emil, Mona, Horace, Murray D. and Jean. Bessie (Dowell) Miller died December 31, 1963 near Springfield, Missouri.

7. Emma Jane Dowell, born April 30, 1883, married to Peter Thompson.

8. William Horace Dowell, born February 11, 1888 near Mike, Missouri, married to Alpha Green in Brookfield, Missouri August 3, 1909.

The story as told by Juanita (Dowell) Vaughn states that Rebecca became quite ill with walking consumption (tuberculosis) and knew she was going to die, so in October 1889 Rebecca was on her way to Colorado (possibly Pueblo, Colorado?) to her sister Emily to take care of Rebecca's three youngest children. Rebecca only made it as far as Edgerton, Missouri where her mother and sister Sue were living.

The following is transcribed from a letter that was discovered in June 2006 in the Bible of Mary E. "Mollie" (Barnes) Gauld (1875-1968), daughter of Rebecca's sister, Sophia S. (Hayden) Barnes.

"Edgerton, Mo., Oct the 11 89 (Oct. 11, 1889)

Dear sisters and family,

I take the sad task of telling you that Beck is dead. She died Sunday night-15 minutes before nine 6th of Oct-25 years ago that day she was married.

She talked about you so much and said she believed if you knew how bad she was you would come and see her. She died so happy talked to us all and told us to meet her in heaven and to tell you all she said to meet her in heaven. She said oh ma I am so happy don't weep for me weep for these that is left behind. Tell them to prepare for this hour. She said Jesus can save them he has saved me. My way is clear I have no fears. I can see Jesus but you all can't-a little while and I will go after-she was struck with death she sang one verse of asleep in Jesus blessed sleep...I will never forget that voice though it is now hushed in death. Oh....wish you could have heard her talk. We dressed her in white cashmere? trimmed in satin. Buried her at our church grave yard. Funeral by our pastor...for me to live is Christ but to die is gain. A large crowd attended the burial...
Sue"
