Daniel, son of David Haragan and Christiana O'Hearn, was born about 1821 in County Cork, Ireland. His birth year of 1821 on the tombstone is inconsistent with his age of 69 at the time of his death in 1889. No birth or baptismal records have been found for Daniel. No source has been found with a middle name for Daniel. "Daniel David" appears in some trees, but this is a result of misreading of the cursive writing on old records and combining the two names to accommodate the confusion. A cursive "Daniel" can look like a cursive "David" — the two humps slightly spaced on a cursive "n" can look like a "v" and a cursive "el" can look like a "d" resulting in a transcription error. Although, Daniel's tombstone has the last name spelled "Harrigan," Daniel himself used the old spelling "Haragan."

In about 1825, Daniel and his younger sibling, John, emigrated to Canada with their parents. Such emigrating families often came "…crowded into ships, the majority in 'steerage', suffering outbreaks of disease…" (Saint Patrick Centennial Book, 1982) In 1825, Daniel's sister, Catherine, was born in Nova Scotia. Sometime thereafter the family moved to the United States where another of Daniel's siblings, Ellen, was born. By about 1830 it appears the family moved again, to Upper Canada. In 1832, when Daniel was about 11, his family was part of the "…first Irish Catholic settlement in northern Peel centered around Silver Creek in the Township of Caledon." (MacDonell to McGuigan, Wm Perkins Bull, Chapter X, "The Northern Men")

On 29 June 1840, Daniel (age about 19) married Mary Dolan (age 22). The church record reads: "Were married by the undersigned in the Church of Albion according to the rites of the Catholic Church Daniel Haragan, of Caledon, and Mary Dolan, of Albion, after three publications of marriage bans no impediment being found thereto. Witnesses were James Dwyer, Joseph Dolan and David Haragan. Father O'Reilly" (Ontario, Roman Catholic Church Records, 1760-1923, Peel, Wildfield, St. Patrick, Baptisms, Marriages 1833-1857, Image 153)

On 13 December 1842, Daniel (age about 21) bought 100 acres from his father, David, "…in the Township of Caledon in the County of York in the Home District and Province…containing by admeasurement one hundred acres….of the South half of Lot Number 2 in the fifth concession East of Hurontario Street of the Township of Caledon a clergy reserve.." His brother, John, bought the North half of this property. (Ontario, Land and Property, Crown Lands Department, Township Papers 1783-1870, Caledon, FHL #1319343)

On 4 September 1846, John and his brother, Daniel, sold their respective portions of the property. (Ontario, Land and Property, Crown Lands Department, Township Papers 1783-1870, Caledon, FHL #1319343) They both subsequently moved from Caledon.

After leaving Caledon, Daniel, Mary and their children (David Paul, Catherine and Dennis) moved to Ellice Township, United Counties of Huron, Perth and Bruce County, Canada West. On 17 June 1847, Daniel bought Lot 28, 6th Concession, Ellice Township which consisted of 100 acres in consideration of 75 pounds, 3 shillings and 9 pence. This transaction apparently was the first deed registered in Ellice Township.

In 1861, the early Haragan home was described as a log cabin. According to the Echoes of Ellice: "At some point, the Haragans built a 1 ½- storey white frame house. It was east of the lane and north of the creek, about halfway between the barn and the present house." Five more children were born to the couple on the family farm in Ellice Township – William, Christina Louise, Joseph D., Mary Ann and Daniel Peter. An earlier child, Dennis, died sometime before 1861. His death and burial details are unknown.

In 1862, Daniel (who already owned Lot 28, Concession 6) also bought the north half of Lot 31, Concession 5 (50 acres) from his brother, David. This land was originally owned by Daniel's parents who had sold it to another of their sons, David, in 1852. In 1866, Daniel (age 45) sold this same 50 acres to his son, David Paul.

In 1876, the west one-half of Daniel's original farm (Lot 28, Concession 6) was sold to another of Daniel's son, William. With the consent of his wife, Mary, Daniel transferred the West half of this lot (50 acres) to William Haragan by deed no. 2908 registered on 6 April 1876.

On 30 April 1889, Daniel (age about 68) died from apoplexy in Ellice Township, Perth County, Ontario, Canada, as it had now become known. He was buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in nearby Kinkora, Perth County, Ontario, Canada.

After Daniel's death in 1889, his widow, Mary, and the following children consented to the sale of their property to son, Daniel Peter Haragan, in a series of deeds (nos. 6155, 6156 and 6157) registered 15 May 1889. Those children were: David Haragan of Ellice Township (his wife, Catherine consenting), Catherine Harkin of Stratford, Ontario (her husband, Daniel Harkin, consenting), Christina Roche of Ellice Township (her husband, John, consenting), Mary Ann Neagle of Saginaw, Michigan (her husband, Maurice, consenting), William Haragan of Ellice (his wife, Mary, consenting) and Joseph Haragan of Portland, Oregon (no indication of marital status).

On 4 November 1903, Daniel's wife, Mary (age 87), died and was buried alongside Daniel at Saint Patrick's Cemetery in Kinkora.

Gravesite Details

Daniel's & Mary' s original tombstone was broken or buried. The current tombstone was erected by the family probably sometime after 1933 because it matches his son William's tombstone.
