John was raised by his widowed father in Appleby, Westmorland, ENG. It's assumed the family received considerable help from his paternal uncles. John and his sisters moved about northern England during the next twenty years ending lastly in Strickland Roger where his sister was living with him as his housekeeper. He married in Kendal on 12 Dec 1853 and with his pregnant wife and her brother, John immigrated to America on the 19th of April 1854 aboard the "Screamer." His sisters both married in England and made their way to America to settle in the same community. He was naturalized on the 26th of May 1860. In September or October of 1866 John's home was completely changed when he and two of his sons died of illness.
