Thomas was conceived in England but was not born until his parents' arrival in Illinois. He took over his share of the farm duties when he was twelve as his father had died. His first wife was Carrie Viggers, the mother of his daughter, whom he married 1879. The daughter was born the next year and Carrie took the child and moved to Chicago, leaving Thomas to settle the divorce. In 1885 he married Thirza Winans and they had two sons. They farmed in Burlington and Charter Grove until 1903 when they moved to Sycamore. Diabetes worsened over the next several years leading to his death in 1912.
