ANN PHILLIPS TONEY, 86, of Houston, Texas, died Friday, August 29, 1997. Formerly of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Toney was the widow of the late Charles Dillard Toney, Jr of Atlanta, Georgia. Nee Annie Laura Phillips, she was born June 13, 1911 in Markham, Fauquier County, Virginia to Ernest Kenton Phillips and Annie Fray Strother. A 1929 graduate of Marshall High School, Marshall, Virginia, for which she played basketball, she then moved to Atlanta, Georgia to work for Southern Railway, where she did clerical work for ten years (1929-1939). She married Mr. Toney on June 16, 1939. She was a member of Capitol View Baptist Church until 1960, at which time she and her family joined the Sylvan Hills Baptist Church, where she remained a member until she moved to Houston, Texas in 1991. In Houston, she lived at the Spring Shadows Place Retirement Community until 1994, and attended the Clay Road Baptist Church. Most recently she lived at Heartland Health Care Center in Houston, where she was loved by staff and residents alike. Mrs. Toney was known for her bright smiles and gentle laugh, and her devotion to her faith. A devoted wife and mother, she was a loyal and loving friend to all who knew her and she will be missed. Survivors include 3 children Charles Dillard Toney III of The Woodlands, Texas, Philip Marvin Toney of Brighton, Michigan, and Nancy Toney Upshaw of Houston, Texas, 2 grandchildren Melissa Ann Toney of Berkeley, New Hampshire, and Craig Philip Toney of Berkeley, Michigan, 1 great-grandchild, Ryenne Marie Piatt-Toney; 2 sisters. Margaret Phillips Harris of Alexandria, Virginia, Mary Phillips Woolsey of Columbia, South Carolina; 2 nieces Aurelia Woolsey Howatt of Springfield, Virginia, Margaret Woolsey Fitts of Columbia, South Carolina, 3 grand-nephews, Tom, Kell, and Daniel Fitts of Columbia, South Carolina. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 7, 1997 in the Chapel of Clay Road Baptist Church, 9151 Clay Rd. in Houston with the Rev Mark Redd officiating. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to Clay Road Baptist Church, 9151 Clay Road, Houston, Texas 77080
