Funeral services for Kenneth T. Mines, 96, of Pukwana SD will be 10:00 am Thursday September 26, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain with burial in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery at Pukwana. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 5:00 pm with a scripture service at 7:00 pm at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain.
Kenneth Thomas Mines was born October 31, 1922 in Brule County, SD to George and Mary (Ryan) Mines. He attended school at Kimball and in 1942 he graduated from Pukwana High School. He was very active in sports while in school. After learning how to drive, Ken used his Model A as a shuttle service for the kids in Pukwana charging ten cents for round trip shuttle or a nickel for a one way.
On July 7, 1950, Kenneth was united in marriage to Norma Clark. To this union, three children were born Rick, Shirley, and Larry. They made their home on a farm north of Pukwana for many years. When Kenny retired in 1998 from farming, he did not actually retire but changed course by growing tomatoes for his neighbors.
Kenny was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Pukwana. For many years, Kenny and Norma enjoyed ballroom and square dancing and were members of the Missouri Valley Square Dance Club. He was instrumental in building the Pukwana Ballroom and danced there for many years.
During his early years when his children were young Kenny was a 4H leader. He was a longtime member of the Missouri Valley Horseman Club. He was an avid horseman and would break horses for friends and neighbors. He worked the longhorn sale with Sharping Brothers. The most enjoyable part of his life were the years spent with his grandchildren teaching them how to help on the farm, drive, and ride horse. As a child, Kenny learned the art of rope making which he loved. He taught that skill to his children and grandchildren.
He served on the election board in Buffalo County for many years
With his birthday being on Halloween, he was a prankster and enjoyed a good joke played on anyone. He built his own snake catcher and caught many rattlesnakes over the years. He also enjoyed playing a good game of cards including solitaire and pinochle.
Kenny passed away on September 21, 2019 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 96 years. Gratefully sharing his life are his two sons Larry (Sheila) Mines of Pukwana and Rick (Margaret) Mines of Centennial, WY; daughter Shirley (Randy) Basting of Chamberlain; ten grandchildren Terry (Janell) Basting, Marcie Basting, Matthew (Kim) Mines, Aric (Tami) Mines, Kelly (Craig) Little Bear, Nikki Mines, Chuck (Crispin) Mines, Ted Mines, Laurie (Matt) Bilben and Josh Knittel; 13 great grandchildren Jade, Gage, Traten, and Kutter Basting, Torie, Natalie, and Alexis Little Bear, Jared, Levi, and Myles Bilben, Delaney Mines, Miley Jo and Axel Mines,; a very special sister-in-law Irene Mines of Peace River, Alberta, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents George and Mary, his wife Norma in 2017; seven brothers John, Charlie, George, Fritz, James, Merle, and Delmer; and two sisters Catherine and Ellen.
