Mary Rosanna J. Sumner was born November 29, 1927 in Alpena Pass, Arkansas to Stephen Decator and Millie Hopper Jones. She graduated from Alpena High School and attended Arkansas State Teacher's College in Conway, Arkansas and then graduated in 1948 from University of Arkansas with a degree in home economics. She then started her home economics teaching career at Carlisle, Arkansas, where she met and married William Harold Sumner, a crop duster pilot and rice farmer.

Her husband was recalled to the USAF in 1952 during the Korean Crisis as an Instructor Pilot and they later spent four years in England and four years in Japan before retiring in 1971 from Dyess AFB. Rosanna continued to teach school from 1948 until 1968. From 1969 to 1972, Rosanna worked in the real estate business as an agent. The Sumners opened Rosanna's Realty in 1972. Rosanna was President of Abilene Board of REALTORS in 1979, State President of Women's Council of REALTORS in 1983, and was National President in 1991. Rosanna and William went to Hong Kong, Singapore, Red China, and Japan in 1991 as delegates to an international real estate forum.

Her legacy will be those joyous years of school teaching and making a difference in the lives of those people around her; the contribution and impact Rosanna made within education, ethical practices and professional standards for the real estate industry nationwide; and her fervent and staunch support of smaller Boards of REALTORS throughout Texas. She lived by the creed that one person could make a difference.

Rosanna is survived by her husband; two sons, Bill Jr. of Abilene and David from Philadelphia; two daughters-in-law, Karen and Kathy; one grandson, Wesley Earle Sumner of Abilene; three brothers, Steve Jones Jr. of Henderson, NV, Claude Jones of Harrison, AR and Wendell O. Jones of Gainesville, FL.

The visitation will be between 6 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Elmwood Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 22, 2003. Graveside service will be at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association in Rosanna's honor.
