WENDELL JONES PH.D. Wendell Oren Jones Ph.D. of Henderson, passed away Sept. 21, 2013.

Wendell was born in 1941 in Alpena, Ark., and was raised by his widowed mother on a farm, as his father died when Wendell was four. At the age of 14, he was invited to live with his sister, Rosanna, who was married to a U.S. Air Force pilot, William Sumner.

He moved to England and lived with the Sumner family for three years. He often commented that living in Europe as a teenager was the experience that permanently changed the direction of his life. After he was graduated from Bushy Park Central High School, an American school in London, he returned to Arkansas and enrolled at the University of Arkansas. Wendell worked his way through college. He was graduated with a bachelor degree in 1962, and as a Distinguished ROTC graduate, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Regular Army.

Before going on active duty, he landed a summer job at the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C., where he dated an intern from Mount Holyoke College. The following December before departing for his first duty assignment in Germany, he and Grace Ann Bougere from Holyoke, Mass. were engaged. They were married June 22, 1963 upon her graduation from college. During the next two years, Daniel and Brian were born in Nurnberg and Heidelberg, Germany, and five years later Kimberly Ann was born in Athens, Ga.

His 25 years of military service included two years of combat duty in Vietnam, two tours in Europe, and multiple stateside assignments in Virginia, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and Kansas. He was appointed to the tenured faculty at West Point, where he taught and chaired the computer science faculty in the early 1980's. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, three Bronze Stars, two Army Commendation medals and various other awards and service ribbons.

After retiring from the U.S. Army as a full colonel, he held a number of corporate senior management positions, including vice president, Worldwide Service Delivery, Compaq Computer Corporation in Boston; senior vice president, Technology Services, NASD/NASDAQ Stock Market in Washington, D.C.; and division general manager, McDonnell Douglas Corporation in southern California.

In his third career, he was as a management professor at Stetson University in Florida and the University of Southern Nevada, which is now Roseman Health Sciences University in Henderson.

He authored his first book on COBOL and the last on outsourcing. His business experience, research, writing and speaking established him as a global outsourcing thought leader and practitioner. His two decades of contributions were recognized in February 2012 with an award from the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals. His last leadership position was chief executive of the Society for Information Management, the professional association for senior IT executives and chief information officers.

In addition to a degree from the University of Arkansas, his education includes an MBA and Ph.D. in management from the University of Georgia and a post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell University. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and the Army War College.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Steve and Claude Jones; and sister, Rosanna Sumner.

He is survived by his wife, of 50 years, Grace Ann Bougere Jones; sons, Dr. Daniel Jones of Wayland, Mass., and Brian Jones of Cordova, Tenn.; daughter, Dr. Kimberly Jones Rudolph of Chester Springs, Pa., seven grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Blvd.

Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring.
