Hugh was in Rowan County (present-day Iredell County) by 1768 and married Rebecca McConnell in 1770. Together they had six known children:
-Margaret Lawson (1771-1779) married William White
-David Lawson (1773-1799)
-Jean Lawson (1773-1812) married Barnabas Torrence
-Mary 'Molly' Lawson (1776-1853)
-Catherine 'Kitty' Lawson (1777-1843) married Alexander Torrence
-Rebecca Berry Lawson (1783-1834) married Samuel Miller
Hugh died in 1884, and was buried in Baker Cemetery which is now under Lake Norman. His grave was relocated to the Baker Cemetery annex in the back of nearby Centre Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
