Professional Football Player. He was the recipient of the Heisman Trophy in 1955. For eight seasons (1956 to 1963), he played at the halfback, split end and flanker positions in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. Born Howard Albert Cassady, he made his initial impact on the football field during his years at Central High School in Ohio. During his collegiate years at Ohio State University, he achieved All-American honors and contributed to the Buckeyes capturing of the national championship in 1954. During his Heisman Trophy winning season, he earned All-American honors as he rushed for 958 yards and produced 15 touchdowns. Additionally, he was named Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press. In addition to football, he also excelled on the school's baseball team. Selected by the Detroit Lions as the number 3 overall pick during the 1956 NFL Draft, he totaled 84 career regular season games. He went on to experience a world championship with the 1957 NFL Title winning Detroit Lions. After retiring from football, he was the proprietor of a company which produced concrete piping. In addition, he served as a scout and Minor League coach with the New York Yankees. He was inducted into the National College Hall of Fame in 1979 and the Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997. His uniform number 40 was retired by Ohio State in 2000.
