Funeral services for Telford Lee Barnhouse, 96, of Victoria, who died Thursday in a local nursing home will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the Rosewood Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Jerry Smith, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Forest Park Cemetery in Houston, under the direction of Rosewood Funeral Chapels.
The body will lie in state at Rosewood Funeral Chapels until 9 p.m. Sunday.
He was born Dec. 28, 1894, in Ironton, Missouri, to the late William Telford, and Emma Jane Staggs Barnhouse. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of the School of Military Aeronautics at the University of Texas and served as U.S. Army aviator during World War I. He was school superintendent in Jim Wells County in 1914 and editor for the Southwest Texas University "Star" in 1919. He received his BS degree from the University of Texas and his MA degree from the University of Colorado. He also received his law degree from the University of Texas. Mr. Barnhouse was editor of the Texas Law Review from 1922 to 1924. He was a coast guard officer during World War II and a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry for 72 years. He was school administrator for the Houston Independent School District for 42 years.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Marie Thatcher Barnhouse of Victoria; two sons, Thomas Telford Barnhouse of Dallas and James Lee Barnhouse of Victoria; a brother, Howard Barnhouse of Delray Beach, Florida; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
