He married Carol Flanders of Edinburg, Texas, on June 7, 1951 in Houston and they have two daughters, Kathy and Susan, and one son, John Thomas (deceased).
James graduated from the U.S. Navy School of Engineering at Newport, RI and served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 with assignments of engineering officer, navigator, commanding officer of the USS Tombigbee, and public information officer of the Eighth Naval District. He is a Korean war veteran. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant J.G. and became the executive officer of the USS Tombigbee, a gasoline tanker servicing the Pacific fleet. After leaving the Navy, he was employed by South American Petrolite Corporation as a manager in Maracaibo, Venezuela for 10 years.
After moving back to Texas, he started his own company, Fisher-Stevens Inc. in Victoria, Texas. He worked for a total of 30 years in the oil industry. In 1980 he was issued a U.S. Patent for development of a lubricant to increase the mobility of fluids in underground formations. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.
James was preceded in death by his parents Telford and Marie, his brother Thomas Barnhouse, and his son John Barnhouse.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, August 11th, in Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, with Rev. Monte Marshall officiating. Graveside services with military honors to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. S
