Family Stories

Written by his brother Lloyd McCabe in May, 2007:

Maybe since my brother Kevin cannot speak for himself, I will provide a little information about his life. Kevin suffered greatly, probably more than any family member, from the estrangement and subsequent move off the farm and into a city of 100,000. Before that time and for many years after, he never wanted anything except to be a farmer.

He was very bright, but hated school. I think now that he was not challenged and lost interest. By the time he graduated from high school, his energy was focused on learning the restaurant business and saving to own one. In his twenties and thirties he was very successful. He worked hard and at one time owned two restaurants and a small hotel. He was on the city council, active in the Shrine, and traveled internationally.

However, he would be quick to tell you that he drank hard every day. The saddest chapter in his tragic life was when a woman manipulated him into marriage, talked him into selling the businesses, and took his net worth from a substantial amount to zero in two years! Kevin never really recovered from that financially, emotionally or socially.

He stayed away from our family for longer and longer periods of time, seeing our parents only once every two or three years. In 2001, Kevin entered a Veteran's Hospital for medical and psychiatric conditions related to alcoholism (diabetes, strokes, etc.) His condition has gradually worsened. He had a second leg amputation last fall.
