Mary Ann May daughter of Joseph May and Mary Ann Augustin May was born in South Carolina. She was the granddaughter of Ben and Mary (Harrison) May. Mary Harrison was a daughter of Burr and Mary E. (Dargon) Harrison. The original Dargon came from Ireland, while the Harrisons were of English origin, tracing their ancestry to Sir Richard Harrison, K. T., Lord of Whitney and Hinton.

She married the Rev. Jacob W. Matthews Mar 11, 1836 in Prattville, Autauga Co, Alabama. Together they had eight eight (8)children as follows: John Fletcher, who died in Milam County, Texas and never married; Doctor Joseph Weir, a physician of Caldwell, Texas and first married to Mary Caroline Hill and second married to Sarah K. P. Atkinson; James Fiske a farmer, horse and cattle breeder, who married Martha (Mattie) Walker Browning and died in Chappell Hill, Texas; Benjamin Emory, who died while a resident of Williamson County, Texas and married Nancy Savanah Atkinson sister to Sarah K. P. Atkinson; Anne Amelia who married Martin McHenry Kenney; Margaret Eliza who married Rufus King Felder and died in Chappell Hill, Texas; William Soule, who was only twelve year old when he died in Chappell Hill, Texas; and Mary Isabella, who married Thomas Coke Thompson, and was a resident of San Angelo, Texas when she died.

Mary Ann Matthews, wife of Rev Jacob Matthews, died in Sharon, Miss, April 4, 1857 in her 43rd year; with father, Joseph May, moved to Autauga Co, Ala. where she married in 1836; moved to Winston Co. Miss. and then in 1848 to where she died.
