Don Hatch, age 65, passed away February 10, 1994, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born May 31, 1928 in Vernal, Utah to Robert Rafael "Bus" Hatch and Eva Caldwell Hatch.
Survived by wife, Meg Hatch, Vernal; children: Craig Hatch, Barry and Shelley Hatch, all of Salt Lake City; Brad and Eileen Hatch, Ft. Collins, Colo.; John and Joy Hatch, Clark and Shanon Hatch, Roger and Wendy May, all of Vernal; nine grandchildren and special family friend, Marlene Cox; brothers and their wives: Gus and Pat Hatch, Shalimar, Fla.; Frank and Atha Hatch, Salt Lake City; Ted and Pat Hatch, Vernal. Preceded in death by his parents.
Graduated from University of Utah where he majored in education. Avid fan of U fo U football and basketball teams. Taught many years in Salt Lake City Schools. Had a great love for music, especially jazz. Accomplished saxophonist, playing in Salt Lake dance bands. Don's love was his river running business which was founded in the late 20's by his father, "Bus". The company was one of the first whitewater rafting companies in North American. Don and his father made the first descent of the Indus River in Pakistan while assisting with the filming of Cinerama's "Search For Paradise". For this Don was inducted into the prestigious Exployers Club. Also to his credit, an early descent of Hells Canyon on the
Snake River and the Chilco-Chilcotin and Frasier Rivers in Canada. He helped organize Western River Guides Assoc. and served as president. Inducted into Utah Tourism Hall of Fame and recently honored by American Outdoors and Idaho Outfitters and Guides Assoc. Served on Dinaland Travel Board. Fought for the preservation of Dinosaur National Monument. An avid sportsman, Don was devoted to the outdoors. Loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and everything associated with "God's Country". Loved his cabin hideaway in the mountains. Enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of the Vernal Rotary Club, The Chamber of Commerce and Uintah Trails Coalition.
Don will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 14, 1994, 11 a.m., First Baptist Church, 2100 West Hwy. 40, Vernal, Utah. Friends may call at Thomson's Vernal Mortuary Sunday evening 7-9 p.m. and Monday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to American Cancer Society or John Wesley Powell Museum, C/O Joann Wetherington, P.O. Box 598, Green River, Utah 84525. Envelopes may be obtained at Thomson's Vernal Mortuary.
