Ray V. Hess
Ray V. Hess, 78, East Moline, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Illini Hospital, Silvis.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 2153 in Moline.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made for Parkinson's research in his name.
Ray was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Elwood, Ill., the son of John and Viola Deutchman Hess. He married Joyce Fergusson Nov. 6, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo.
Ray began his career with the federal government at the Joliet Arsenal. He then joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in March 1943. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II with the 84th Airdrome Squadron, and was awarded two bronze battle stars.
Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to the Joliet Arsenal. He later owned and operated Hess IGA and also owned and operated Hess and Sons General Construction, both in Elwood.
He then moved to California, where he returned to work for the federal government at the U.S. Naval Air Facility in El Centro. He retired in 1978 after 30 years as a scheduler and general foreman over public works at the facilty.
He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge 919, AFandAM, Elwood. He was a member and elder of Elwood Presbyterian Church. He was the first president of the Elwood Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a member of the school board and other community services in Elwood.
He was a participant in the tape ministry for shut-ins at Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Joyce, East Moline; sons, John T. (Jeanie) Hess, East Moline, and Timothy R. (Ellen) Hess, Murietta, Calif.; four grandchildren, Heidi (Matthew) Kushmer and Heather Hess, both of Moline, and Timothy Hess II and Carolyn Hess, both of Murietta, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Austin and Madison Kushmer, both of Moline; a sister, Blanche Mitok, Joliet; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ray Jr., a brother, Harvey Hess, and a sister, Alice Kurth.
