Greenfield, Massachusetts - James J. ""Jim"" DeJoy, Sr., 89, a resident of 20 Pierce Street, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the Buckley Health Care Center, following a period of declining health.
Jim was born on May 30, 1923 in Lynn, Massachusetts, a son to Antonio and Jessie (LeFebre) DeJoy and was educated in Lynn Public Schools during his formative years. He moved to Greenfield, MA at the age of 12 and continued his education attending Greenfield Public Schools. In 1940 at the age of 17, he entered the United States Navy and served honorably during WWII in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and in the Korean Conflict. Jim left the USN to enter the United States Air Force in July of 1952 and served through out the balance of the Korean Conflict, as well as during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in September of 1969 with 27 years, eight months of continuous military service to our country.
Upon his return to civilian life, he accepted a position in 1970 at Deerfield Academy, working in the schools physical plant in plumbing services, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. Jim was an active member of the DAV, as well as a life member of the B.P.O.E. Greenfield Lodge #1296. Jim enjoyed following the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He played softball (as a pitcher) while serving in the USAF, and was a member of the Greenfield Lions, a semi-pro football team from 1950-1951.
He traveled extensively with his late wife, the former Hilda M. Hohengasser, whom he married on November 30, 1948 in Holy Trinity Church, Greenfield, MA. They enjoyed numerous cross country trips, as well as several international trips in particular, to Italy and England. She predeceased him in July of 1999, following nearly 51 years of marriage together. He also enjoyed following the many interests of his grandchildren, walking and was a dog lover, in particular to his canine companion ""Skyler"" who will miss him.
He is survived by his loving children: James J. DeJoy, Jr., and his wife Lori, of Red Hook, NY and their children, Jonathan and Jennifer, in addition to Jim's daughter Chiara and her husband Kirk; Suzanne S. Hunter of Greenfield, MA, and her children Christopher DeJoy and Brianna Hunter; Antonio ""Tony"" DeJoy and his wife Karen, of Templeton, MA and their children, Brian and Sarah; Steven E. DeJoy of Northfield, MA and his children, Eric and Nicholas
Additionally, Jim leaves his brother Michael DeJoy and his wife Mary, of Peabody, MA, as well as several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews to remember him with great affection. He was predeceased by his brothers Raymond and Dominic, as well as by his sisters Louise Hall and Esther Webb.
Services in celebration of his life and patriotism, will be observed on Friday, January 4, 2012 at 2:00PM, from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA, with Rev. Fr. Timothy J. Campoli, Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Greenfield to offer the Catholic Rite of Burial Service. Rites of committal and burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA, with full military honors to be provided by members of the Elite Patriot Honor Guard of the USAF in attendance, assisted by the members of the Hale-Clapp VFW Post #3295 of South Deerfield, MA, who will provide a firing detail. Visiting hours will be omitted at the request of the deceased.
