George Olney was a civilian auditor who worked as quartermaster and secretary for Major General Nathanael Greene.

Many of the official letters from General Greene were signed by George Olney. His signature was recognized as being equivalent to the signature of General Greene.

He was with General Greene at least through the wintering over at Morristown when Mr. James Abeel, " provided quarters for Mrs. Greene and Mrs. Olney near his house, and will do everything to make their situation agreeable."

He was the brother of Col Jeremiah Olney (1749-1812) and the half brother of Capt Joseph Olney, Jr(1737-1814)
