Died in Hudson New York but is remains were buried in the family plot in Rhode Island in November 1814.

Married Anne Paget on November 28, 1762 at King's Church, Providence, Rhode Island. Some sources say her name was Nancy.

Before the war, Joseph Olney was the Captain of a merchant vessel.

He was a Captain in the Continental Navy. His ship, the Queen of France, Was an older Frigate purchased from France.

His half brother Jeremiah Olney(1749-1812) was the commander of the Rhode Island First Regiment for the last two years of the Revolutionary War.

Another half brother, George Olney(1745-1831) was the personal secretary and quartermaster for Major General Nathanael Greene(1742-1786) throughout the war.
