Tony, as he was called, was born on March 1, 1933, in Cadillac, Michigan to Joseph and Agnes (Russ) Stayer. Tony attended Central Michigan University where he participated in both the basketball and baseball team. He entered into marriage with the former Elizabeth "Emma" Shumsky on June 16, 1956 in Suttons Bay. He answered the call of duty serving in the United States Army. Tony worked as a high school teacher in Mio, Michigan for twelve years before moving to Carson City, Michigan, where he spent the remainder of his career and served as the Elementary principal from 1966 until 1988. Tony was dearly loved by students and parents alike. He was proud of his schools sports teams, especially the football, basketball and baseball teams. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf. Tony loved spending time with his family and friends playing cards and board games. He was very active at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Carson City and was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus as well as the Lions Club.
Tony is survived by his son, Tom Stayer; two grandchildren, Abagail (Dan) Norrad and Joseph (Scarlet) Stayer; nine great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Zackaree, Jaylee, Miles, Dominick, Emma Kay, Braydon, Kayson and Kolby Nash; two sisters, Josephine Vincent of St. Clair, MI and Agnes (Ted) Fewless of Cadillac; and many other loving family members and friends.
Tony is preceded in death by his wife, Emma, his parents, four brothers, Joseph, Albert, Edward and John; two sisters, Frances and Margaret.
Family would like to extend a special "thank you" to their daughter in-law Joanie Perrault for all of her help with Tony's care.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be conducted on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. with visitation held one hour prior at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Suttons Bay with Rev. Leonard Paul to preside. Interment will take place at St. Michael Cemetery.
